What is calcium and what does it do?</h3>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=204" style="color: black;" target="tWin">Calcium</a> is a mineral found in many foods. The body needs calcium to maintain strong bones and to carry out many important functions. Almost all calcium is stored in bones and teeth, where it supports their structure and hardness.</div>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
The body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part. In addition, calcium is used to help blood vessels move blood throughout the body and to help release <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=519" style="color: black;" target="tWin">hormones</a> and <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=279" style="color: black;" target="tWin">enzymes</a> that affect almost every function in the human body.</div>

What foods provide calcium?</h3>
<div style="height: 36px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Calcium is found in many foods. You can get recommended amounts of calcium by eating a variety of foods, including the following:</div>
<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li>Milk, yogurt, and cheese are the main food sources of calcium for the majority of people in the United States.</li>
<li>Kale, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage are fine vegetable sources of calcium.</li>
<li>Fish with soft bones that you eat, such as canned sardines and salmon, are fine animal sources of calcium.</li>
<li>Most grains (such as breads, pastas, and unfortified cereals), while not rich in calcium, add significant amounts of calcium to the diet because people eat them often or in large amounts.</li>
<li>Calcium is added to some breakfast cereals, fruit juices, soy and rice beverages, and tofu. To find out whether these foods have calcium, check the product labels.</li>
</ul>
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5675180248202016445" name="h4" style="text-decoration: underline;"></a><br />
<h3 style="color: #762a34; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; margin: 10px 0px 5px; padding: 0px;">
What kinds of calcium dietary supplements are available?</h3>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Calcium is found in many multivitamin-mineral supplements, though the amount varies by product. Dietary supplements that contain only calcium or calcium with other nutrients such as <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=348" style="color: black;" target="tWin">vitamin D</a> are also available. Check the Supplement Facts label to determine the amount of calcium provided.</div>
<div style="height: 126px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
The two main forms of calcium dietary supplements are carbonate and citrate. <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=445" style="color: black;" target="tWin">Calcium carbonate</a> is inexpensive, but is absorbed best when taken with food. Some over-the-counter antacid products, such as Tums® and Rolaids®, contain calcium carbonate. Each pill or chew provides 200–400 mg of calcium. Calcium citrate, a more expensive form of the supplement, is absorbed well on an empty or a full stomach. In addition, people with low levels of stomach acid (a condition more common in people older than 50) absorb calcium citrate more easily than calcium carbonate. Other forms of calcium in supplements and fortified foods include gluconate, lactate, and phosphate.</div>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Calcium absorption is best when a person consumes no more than 500 mg at one time. So a person who takes 1,000 mg/day of calcium from supplements, for example, should split the dose rather than take it all at once.</div>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Calcium supplements may cause gas, bloating, and constipation in some people. If any of these symptoms occur, try spreading out the calcium dose throughout the day, taking the supplement with meals, or changing the supplement brand or calcium form you take.</div>

<h3 style="color: #762a34; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; margin: 10px 0px 5px; padding: 0px;">
Am I getting enough calcium?</h3>
<div style="height: 18px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Many people don't get recommended amounts of calcium from the foods they eat, including:</div>
<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li>Boys aged 9 to 13 years,</li>
<li>Girls aged 9 to 18 years,</li>
<li>Women older than 50 years,</li>
<li>Men older than 70 years.</li>
</ul>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
When total intakes from both food and supplements are considered, many people—particularly adolescent girls—still fall short of getting enough calcium, while some older women likely get more than the safe upper limit. See our <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-HealthProfessional/#h4" style="color: black;">Health Professional Fact Sheet</a> on Calcium for more details.</div>
<div style="height: 18px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Certain groups of people are more likely than others to have trouble getting enough calcium:</div>
<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li><a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=324" style="color: black;" target="tWin">Postmenopausal</a> women because they experience greater bone loss and do not absorb calcium as well. Sufficient calcium intake from food, and supplements if needed, can slow the rate of bone loss.</li>
<li>Women of childbearing age whose menstrual periods stop (amenorrhea) because they exercise heavily, eat too little, or both. They need sufficient calcium to cope with the resulting decreased calcium absorption, increased calcium losses in the urine, and slowdown in the formation of new bone.</li>
<li>People with <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=170" style="color: black;" target="tWin">lactose</a> intolerance cannot digest this natural sugar found in milk and experience symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea when they drink more than small amounts at a time. They usually can eat other calcium-rich dairy products that are low in lactose, such as yogurt and many cheeses, and drink lactose-reduced or lactose-free milk.</li>
<li>Vegans (vegetarians who eat no animal products) and ovo-vegetarians (vegetarians who eat eggs but no dairy products), because they avoid the dairy products that are a major source of calcium in other people's diets.</li>
</ul>
<div style="height: 18px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Many factors can affect the amount of calcium absorbed from the <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=608" style="color: black;" target="tWin">digestive tract</a>, including:</div>
<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li>Age. Efficiency of calcium absorption decreases as people age. Recommended calcium intakes are higher for people over age 70.</li>
<li>Vitamin D intake. This vitamin, present in some foods and produced in the body when skin is exposed to sunlight, increases calcium absorption.</li>
<li>Other components in food. Both oxalic acid (in some vegetables and beans) and phytic acid (in whole grains) can reduce calcium absorption. People who eat a variety of foods don't have to consider these factors. They are accounted for in the calcium recommended intakes, which take absorption into account.</li>
</ul>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Many factors can also affect how much calcium the body eliminates in urine, feces, and sweat. These include consumption of alcohol- and caffeine-containing beverages as well as intake of other nutrients (<a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=327" style="color: black;" target="tWin">protein</a>, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus). In most people, these factors have little effect on calcium status.</div>
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5675180248202016445" name="h6" style="text-decoration: underline;"></a><br />
<h3 style="color: #762a34; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; margin: 10px 0px 5px; padding: 0px;">
What happens if I don't get enough calcium?</h3>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Insufficient intakes of calcium do not produce obvious symptoms in the short term because the body maintains calcium levels in the blood by taking it from bone. Over the long term, intakes of calcium below recommended levels have health consequences, such as causing low bone mass (osteopenia) and increasing the risks of<a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=315" style="color: black;" target="tWin">osteoporosis</a> and bone fractures.</div>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Symptoms of serious calcium deficiency include numbness and tingling in the fingers, convulsions, and abnormal heart rhythms that can lead to death if not corrected. These symptoms occur almost always in people with serious health problems or who are undergoing certain medical treatments.</div>
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5675180248202016445" name="h7" style="text-decoration: underline;"></a><br />
<h3 style="color: #762a34; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; margin: 10px 0px 5px; padding: 0px;">
What are some effects of calcium on health?</h3>
<div style="height: 36px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Scientists are studying calcium to understand how it affects health. Here are several examples of what this research has shown:</div>
<div style="height: 90px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>Bone health and osteoporosis</em><br />
Bones need plenty of calcium and vitamin D throughout childhood and adolescence to reach their peak strength and calcium content by about age 30. After that, bones slowly lose calcium, but people can help reduce these losses by getting recommended amounts of calcium throughout adulthood and by having a healthy, active lifestyle that includes weight-bearing physical activity (such as walking and running).</div>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones in older adults (especially women) in which the bones become porous, fragile, and more prone to fracture. Osteoporosis is a serious public health problem for more than 10 million adults in the United States. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intakes as well as regular exercise are essential to keep bones healthy throughout life.</div>
<div style="height: 36px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>Cardiovascular Disease</em><br />
Most research does not show a link between calcium and the risk of heart disease or stroke.</div>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>High blood pressure</em><br />
Some studies have found that getting recommended intakes of calcium can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure <a class="fscopy" href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=226" style="color: black;" target="tWin">(hypertension)</a>. One large study in particular found that eating a diet high in fat-free and low-fat dairy products, vegetables, and fruits lowered blood pressure.</div>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>Cancer</em><br />
Studies have examined whether calcium supplements or diets high in calcium might lower the risks of developing cancer of the <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=605" style="color: black;" target="tWin">colon</a> or rectum or increase the risk of <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=650" style="color: black;" target="tWin">prostate cancer</a>. The research to date provides no clear answers. Given that cancer develops over many years, longer term studies are needed.</div>
<div style="height: 90px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>Kidney stones</em><br />
Most kidney stones are rich in calcium oxalate. Some studies have found that higher intakes of calcium from dietary supplements are linked to a greater risk of kidney stones, especially among older adults. But calcium from foods does not appear to cause kidney stones. For most people, other factors (such as not drinking enough fluids) probably have a larger effect on the risk of kidney stones than calcium intake.</div>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
<em>Weight loss</em><br />
Although several studies have shown that getting more calcium helps lower body weight or reduce weight gain over time, most studies have found that calcium—from foods or dietary supplements—has little if any effect on body weight and amount of body fat.</div>
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5675180248202016445" name="h8" style="text-decoration: underline;"></a><br />
<h3 style="color: #762a34; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; margin: 10px 0px 5px; padding: 0px;">
Can calcium be harmful?</h3>
<div style="height: 54px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Getting too much calcium can cause constipation. It might also interfere with the body's ability to absorb <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=300" style="color: black;" target="tWin">iron</a>and <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=352" style="color: black;" target="tWin">zinc</a>, but this effect is not well established. In adults, too much calcium (from dietary supplements but not food) might increase the risk of kidney stones.</div>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
The safe upper limits for calcium are listed below. Most people do not get amounts above the upper limits from food alone; excess intakes usually come from the use of calcium supplements. Surveys show that some older women in the United States probably get amounts somewhat above the upper limit since the use of calcium supplements is common among these women.</div>

Are there any interactions with calcium that I should know about?</h3>
<div style="height: 36px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Calcium dietary supplements can <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=389" style="color: black;" target="tWin">interact</a> or interfere with certain medicines that you take, and some medicines can lower or raise calcium levels in the body. Here are some examples:</div>
<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li>Calcium can reduce the absorption of these drugs when taken together:<ul style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 40px;">
<li>Bisphosphonates (to treat osteoporosis)</li>
<li>Antibiotics of the fluoroquinolone and tetracycline families</li>
<li>Levothyroxine (to treat low thyroid activity)</li>
<li>Phenytoin (an <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=602" style="color: black;" target="tWin">anticonvulsant</a>)</li>
<li>Tiludronate disodium (to treat Paget's disease).</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=495" style="color: black;" target="tWin">Diuretics</a> differ in their effects. Thiazide-type diuretics (such as Diuril® and Lozol®) reduce calcium excretion by the kidneys which in turn can raise blood calcium levels too high. But loop diuretics (such as Lasix® and Bumex®) increase calcium excretion and thereby lower blood calcium levels.</li>
<li>Antacids containing aluminum or <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=699" style="color: black;" target="tWin">magnesium</a> increase calcium loss in the urine.</li>
<li>Mineral oil and stimulant <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/showterm.aspx?tID=144" style="color: black;" target="tWin">laxatives</a> reduce calcium absorption.</li>
<li>Glucocorticoids (such as prednisone) can cause calcium depletion and eventually osteoporosis when people use them for months at a time.</li>
</ul>
<div style="height: 72px; padding-bottom: 10px;">
Tell your doctor, pharmacist, and other health care providers about any dietary supplements and medicines you take. They can tell you if those dietary supplements might interact or interfere with your prescription or over-the-counter medicines or if the medicines might interfere with how your body absorbs, uses, or breaks down nutrients.</div>

Where do we get Vitamin D?</h2>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.6em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Sunshine is the main natural source of our Vitamin D. Less than 10% of Vitamin D is from our diet. In the UK, Vitamin D can only be made in our skin by the action of sunlight during the summer-time, and only during the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky. Vitamin D is found in a few natural foods such as oily fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel, pilchards and tuna). A few foods are fortified with small amounts of Vitamin D (infant formula milk, margarine and some breakfast cereals). Therefore,the main source of Vitamin D for much of our population these days is supplements, either prescribed or over-the-counter from pharmacies, health food shops and the internet.</div>

What is Vitamin D?</h2>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.6em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that we need for healthy bones, and to control the amount of calcium in the blood. There is recent evidence that it has a role in preventing many other important diseases.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;">There is scientific debate about what is the optimal Vitamin D blood level. Vitamin D deficiency historically is defined as a blood level of 25hydroxyVitaminD below 25nmol/L. Current practice is to define deficiency as less than 50nmol/Lbased on robust evidence of benefits to bone health when levels are more than 50nmol/L.</span></div>

Why is Vitamin D important?</h2>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 1.6em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Vitamin D deficiency is an increasing problem, especially for dark-skinned people. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets and poor growth in children, seizures in infants and adolescents, cardiomyopathy in infants, and osteomalacia in adults. It can cause muscle weakness at any age.</div>

2. Reduced sun exposure:</h3>
<ol style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-type: lower-alpha; margin: 0px 1.5em 24px 3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Northern latitude – especially above 50 degrees latitude</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Season – low levels are common in winter and spring</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Asian and Afro-Caribbean people – dark-skinned people need more sunshine to make Vitamin D</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Wearing concealing clothing</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Immobility – especially those with chronic diseases</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Excessive use of sun block – most block out UVB more than UVA (although it is UVA which is the main cause of skin cancer)</li>
</ol>
<h3 style="border: 0px; clear: both; font-family: inherit; font-size: 13px; font-style: inherit; line-height: 22px; margin: 20px 0px 2px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
3. Diet (but remember sunshine is more important – less than 10% of Vitamin D is from diet):</h3>
<ol style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; list-style-type: lower-alpha; margin: 0px 1.5em 24px 3em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Vegan</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Prolonged breastfeeding – breast milk does not contain enough Vitamin D to maintain levels in a baby even if the mother has sufficient Vitamin D</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Exclusion diets – e.g. cows milk allergy</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Malabsorption – e.g. Coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Liver disease – (impaired 25-hydroxylation)</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Renal disease – (impaired 1-hydroxylation)</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">Some drugs – e.g. Anticonvulsants, Anti-TB drugs</li>

<span style="background-color: transparent;">Rosemont, IL, October 17, 2012 – A startling increase in the frequency of severe vitamin D deficiency is being reported in the U.S. and other countries. This severe deficiency can have a devastating impact on a child’s bone strength, the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) says. “Vitamin D is essential to our body’s ability to absorb calcium from our diet to build strong bones which are the building blocks of a healthy body, and to make muscles move,” says Dr. Ellen Raney of Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland, Oregon. Several groups have joined USBJI to raise awareness of the importance of strong bones and muscles during World Pediatric Bone and Joint (PB&J) Day, celebrated on October 19, which is part of Bone and Joint Health National Awareness Week (Oct. 12-20). </span></div>

If the problem starts early, kids’ growth may be severely stunted. The arms or legs may not grow straight, or bones may be weak and easily broken.” </span></span></div>

Always a bit “knock-kneed,” this became more pronounced, and he stopped playing basketball because of knee pain. His examination and X-rays showed severely abnormal bending at both knees. A blood test showed severe vitamin D deficiency. </span></span></div>

His vitamin D level also was severely deficient. </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">During sunny times, the body can make sufficient vitamin D with just a few minutes a day of midday sun exposure without sun screen. However, dermatologists caution against direct sun exposure to avoid risks of skin damage and skin cancer. A useful alternative to sun exposure is supplemental vitamin D. There is some controversy about the amount of vitamin D that children and adults should take in, ranging from 400 IU to 2,000 IU daily. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Institute of Medicine recommend a daily intake of 400 IU per day of vitamin D during the first year of life beginning in the first few days, and 600 IU for everyone over age 1. Everyone-- and in the case of children, their parents-- should consult their primary care professional to determine the correct amount of vitamin D they should be taking to ensure optimal vitamin D levels. </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">For anyone trying to achieve any significant weight loss, sticking to a long-term lifestyle change can be hard at times. We may all wish for a “magic pill” that will get us to our ideal weight without the diet, exercise, and vegetables. I hate to report there is no such pill out there yet (or else Oprah would have it). The good news is that there are some vitamins that can help ensure you are on the path to weight loss success. Vitamin B12, omega 3 fish oil, and vitamin D all play an important role in helping you achieve an ideal weight. </span><strong style="font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Vitamin B12 for Weight Loss</strong><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb12-HealthProfessional/)." style="color: #76a53f; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="Vitamin B12">Vitamin B12</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> is a water-soluble vitamin that plays several roles in the body including the creation of red blood cells and how well your body uses calories. It is usually found bound to protein in animal foods such as fish, chicken, and beef. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency, leading to anemia, is generally only found in people who have had some type of stomach surgery (such as weight loss surgery).</span><span id="more-960" style="font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> Some weight loss clinics give patients </span><a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-b12-injections/AN01400)." style="color: #76a53f; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="B12 Injections">B12 shots</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> claiming that the vitamin itself causes weight loss. Although this practice is not completely misguided and probably harmless, vitamin B12 via shots or pills will NOT cause weight loss on their own. But vitamin B12 does play a role in how your body uses calories. Thus, making sure y our body has enough B12 can lead to increased energy. More energy will hopefully result in more exercise and greater motivation which will lead to safe and healthy weight loss. </span><strong style="font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Fish Oil for Weight Loss</strong><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/993.html" style="color: #76a53f; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Fish Oil</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: omnes-pro, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> (also called omega 3s) has gotten a lot of press lately because of its many benefits related </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
to heart disease and diabetes. Many studies have shown that Omega 3 fish oil can promote natural weight loss. Omega 3 fish oil works as an anti-inflammatory, calming the immune system and helping fight some of the damage caused by pollution, poor food choices, and lack of exercise. This allows the body to focus on getting to its natural weight because it is not as busy trying fight toxins it is exposed to on a daily basis. Omega 3 fish oil has also been <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0195666308004972" style="background-color: transparent; color: #76a53f; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">found </a>to help reduce hunger and control cravings. Omega 3 fish oil plays a part in controlling and maintaining insulin levels. Insulin is a storage hormone that is used to signal the body’s cells to take in calories. If insulin levels are chronically high (in many of us they are due to a high sugar, high carbohydrate diet), the body’s cells are being told to take <em style="background-color: transparent;">in</em> calories but never have a chance to <em style="background-color: transparent;">release</em> the calories (i.e. fat), leading to weight gain. If insulin levels are well regulated, the body’s cells have a chance to release stored fat and weight loss ensues. Overall, due to the many potential benefits, omega 3 fish oil should be included in any well-rounded weight loss program. <strong style="background-color: transparent;">Vitamin D for Weight Loss</strong> The link between <a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminD-QuickFacts/" style="background-color: transparent; color: #76a53f; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">vitamin D</a> and weight loss is not completely understood by researchers, but vitamin D can play a role in the body’s ability to lose weight. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it is stored in the body’s fat cells. It is important to not take too much vitamin D because it can result in toxicity. A supplement with 1000 IU or less of the vitamin is generally safe for most people. Many overweight people have been found to have vitamin D deficiency, but it is unclear if the weight led to the deficiency or if the deficiency led to the weight gain. There have been <a href="http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/153669.php" style="background-color: transparent; color: #76a53f; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">studies </a>that have shown that subjects with higher levels of vitamin D were more successful at losing weight on low-calorie diets, but the exact reason for this is still unclear. Those trying to lose weight should get their vitamin D levels checked. Difficulty losing weight can be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. If you are deficient, a doctor may give you up to 10,000 IU to help normalize your levels. Although there is no magic weight loss “pill”, there are many vitamins that influence your body’s ability to lose weight. When starting any weight loss program, it is important to maintain a balanced diet and take a daily multivitamin to give your body all the nutrition it needs to function properly. If you are worried about vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin b12 deficiency and omega 3 deficiency, ask your doctor for a blood test to identify any potential problem areas before taking high doses of supplements.</div>

High blood pressure and factors such as high cholesterol, obesity and smoking contribute to cardiovascular disease. In the United States, someone experiences a coronary event every 25 seconds and someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, according to the 2011 heart disease and stroke statistics published by "Circulation," a publication of the American Heart Association. It could prove dangerous to self-treat high blood pressure with vitamin B complex.</div>

The B vitamins, found in a variety of foods, provide important health benefits, including promoting healthy digestion and improving liver and nervous system function. Individual B vitamins, as prescribed by your doctor, may treat conditions such as high cholesterol, type 1 diabetes and eye disease. If you take over-the-counter vitamin B complex, containing a half dozen or more B vitamins, the effects may prove contradictory. One B vitamin, for instance, might raise your blood pressure, while another could lower it.</div>

If your blood pressure normally measures low, do not take vitamin B complex that includes vitamin B-3. Niacin could cause a serious drop in your blood pressure. If you think vitamin B-3 might help you treat hypertension -- high blood pressure -- talk to your doctor about potential risks, benefits and -- if applicable -- recommended dose. Taking niacin in doses high enough to lower high blood pressure puts you at risk for serious side effects, including liver damage, loss of vision, stomach ulcers and irregular heartbeat. Although niacin may lower your blood pressure, it could increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.</div>

Vitamin B-5, another B vitamin commonly found in B complex supplements, may raise your blood pressure. If you take a B complex supplement that contains both B-3 and B-5 -- niacin and pantothenic acid -- they may cancel each other out in terms of effectiveness in treating blood pressure problems. If you have hemophilia, a blood clotting disorder, do not take B complex supplements that contain vitamin B-5 -- it could make it harder to control bleeding.</div>

You should see a doctor about the best way to treat high blood pressure. You may need to take a prescription medication rather than an over-the-counter remedy such as vitamin B complex. If you want to try safe home remedies, reduce the sodium and increase the potassium in your diet. This means consuming fewer processed foods and replacing salt with other spices in cooking, as well as adding potassium-rich foods such as sweet potatoes, bananas, spinach and raisins to your diet.</div>

<br />
<br />
<b><u>The role of calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus in maintaining healthy teeth</u></b><br />
<br />
Calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus all play a vital role in the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and gums in both children and adults.<br />
<br />
<u>Calcium plays a role in making the jaw bones healthy and strong to hold the teeth in place</u>. However, calcium needs phosphorus to maximise its bone strengthening benefits. Children’s teeth need adequate calcium and phosphorus to form a hard structure during growth.<br />
<br />
<u>Vitamin D regulates the body’s balance of calcium and phosphorus and can promote absorption. Vitamin D can also help to decrease inflammation of gums which is associated with periodontal (gum) disease*</u>.<br />
<br />
A healthy diet is essential for healthy teeth.<br />

Vitamin B-6 also complements the nervous system by synthesizing the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine.<br /><br />Regulation of the nervous system is effective in maintaining mood swings of anxiety, depression and irritability frequently experienced during smoking withdrawal. In addition, serotonin helps with insomnia that may result from smoking cessation.<br /><br />Taking a daily supplement or eating foods rich in B-6 may work to curb cravings and weight gain associated with quitting smoking. Cereal, potatoes, bananas, beans, nuts and meat are among the foods containing the highest levels of vitamin B-6.<br /><br /><b>Gain Calming Effects</b><br />Withdrawal symptoms of restlessness and irritability occur as nicotine levels in the body drop. The calming feeling thought to be obtained by smoking a cigarette is in fact relative to the physical addiction to the substance. The body begins to have difficulty adjusting to a lower level of nicotine stimulation, which can stunt the cessation process by creating a feeling of agitation leading to cravings.<br /><br />Vitamins B-12 and B-5 are natural calming agents, reducing stress and fatigue while promoting better sleeping habits. Insomnia and anxiety associated with quitting smoking may be alleviated using a vitamin B complex. The stress-relieving properties of the B vitamins may act as a substitute for cigarettes, naturally reducing levels of nervousness and irritability.<br /><br />Vitamin B-12 and B-5 are found in whole grains, nuts, tuna and bananas. As supplements, they are available separately or within a vitamin B complex.<br /><br />Restore the Body<br />Smoking creates oxidation of the organs, depletion of collagen, and cadmium toxicity of the kidneys and lungs. These harmful effects of smoking deplete the body of vitamin C, resulting in a deficit of the levels needed for optimum health and energy.<br /><br />Vitamin C is an antioxidant, providing natural protection as an immune defense from environmental radicals and viruses. Vitamin C helps keeps the body strong, energized and healthy, restoring the body's immune system and cells. Once the body can retain vitamin C due to smoking cessation, it begins to feel physically and mentally energized. The sustainable qualities of vitamin C work toward curbing mental and physical addiction to nicotine associated with cigarette and food cravings.<br /><br />Citrus foods, broccoli, red and green peppers, and spinach are examples of foods rich in vitamin C content. Vitamin C supplements are available at drugstores and health stores.<br /><br /><br /><br />sources:<br />http://www.ehow.com/way_5304823_vitamins-stop-smoking.html<br /><br />Read more: Vitamins That Help You Stop Smoking | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/way_5304823_vitamins-stop-smoking.html#ixzz2MeKzPrha<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08439904621370400171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675180248202016445.post-71663564796764482812013-02-05T17:10:00.000-08:002013-03-13T17:11:11.622-07:00G-Core 3<br />

Not having enough calcium in the diet is one of many factors associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, a disease that speeds up the process of the natural loss of calcium in the bones. This causes the bones to become weak and fragile, leading to loss of height, curved spines, and bone fractures, especially in women. In recent years, the recommended amount of calcium has been increased from <u>800 mg to 1000 to 1200 mg per day</u>. Dairy products are the most common source of calcium for people in western industrialized countries. But, as you know, most of the dairy products most commonly eaten are very high in saturated fat and cholesterol, as well as calories! This is not a good trade-off - increasing your risk of heart disease and weight gain by eating dairy products high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories in order to decrease your risk or osteoporosis by getting the calcium they contain! So, how can you get enough calcium and still follow your weight loss plan?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /><a name='more'></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Do You Get Enough Calcium?</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://i-fern-globalprosperity.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_9700.html"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZjqN86tkIky0Mf0MmIIKIcPEJ7OeBdNOYiyBkmGxpvVo545-ks3Rk8HJdPpiOPma-IsUTq5cgEcSwka2grA9Phk1xPCnnEBONDBcSKlV-bRQr7Gz-9Ba2pFRslZ6_3jf240HpqZxPQTNb/s320/SITE-MILKCA-1024x640.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><div style="text-align: justify;">The answer is no, you will not be getting enough calcium just from foods if you are following a reduced calorie plan to lose weight. If you are trying to lose weight, your diet plan contains less food than you need right now, which means it’s a lot harder to get all the calcium you need. In order to get enough calcium from just the foods you eat, you should eat 3-4 servings of high calcium foods every day. To get enough calcium from medium sources, you need to eat more servings, about 3 servings of medium calcium foods equal one high calcium serving. (In other words, to get the amount of calcium in 1 cup of skim milk, you need to eat 3 cups of broccoli!) Most of you have a plan that contains 2-3 servings of dairy products. <i><b>This is why I recommend that you take a calcium supplement</b></i> if you are following a reduced calorie plan. In fact, most adults, especially women, would benefit from taking a calcium supplement whether they are following a reduced calorie diet plan or not. This is because the average person doesn’t eat an optimal diet to begin with! In fact, when you follow your eating guidelines, they are designed to help you get the best combination of nutrients with the right amount of calories for weight loss. Even so, it would be very hard to get enough calcium just from eating food during weight loss.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>A Matter of Age</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The amount of bone you build during teen and young adult years is called peak bone mass. This is the strongest your bones will ever be, and that is why getting enough calcium while you are growing is so important. After your early 20’s, you do not build bone mass, so the goal is keep your bones healthy the remainder of your life by doing a few simple things:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Eat enough calcium from low fat sources, or supplement</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Strengthen your bones through regular exercise</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Avoid unhealthy, low calorie diet plans</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you are a post-menopausal woman, discuss </div><div style="text-align: justify;">estrogen replacement with your doctor</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Avoid smoking, and if you do smoke, quit!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Source:<a href="http://www.dietsurf.com/calcium.htm">http://www.dietsurf.com/calcium.htm</a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08439904621370400171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675180248202016445.post-45365929420574709782013-02-03T20:34:00.000-08:002013-03-07T10:35:16.157-08:008 Reasons Why People Don't Succeed In This Network Marketing Industry<br />Presented by: Ms. Sheryll Edman at FERN Corporate Center (FCC)<br /><br />1. The industrial revolution resulted in more indoor work and less exposure to sunlight. Many societies around the world wore more clothing over the centuries, further reducing skin exposure to sunlight. These changes have brought with them a significant reduction in the natural production of vitamin D and subsequent diseases. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://i-fern-globalprosperity.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_7171.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGbsnSyyNlv5uNRvhFXLlYVc9fFloCeVayEGhahR5FCLOF_AcOdHYgk4OPFiYwERYVbecOkXpXPc8s_AtND65rngHw0CqP0qtBJxZEiphN-J4sCmAOgHRY1zSAzpG7-TfA94oMCX8ScCou/s1600/FERNDPRODSHLANDINGifern.jpg" /></a>Countries responded to these changes by fortifying some foods with vitamins D2 and D3, examples include breakfast cereals, bread, pastries, oil spreads, margarine, milk and other dairy products. Initially, some scientists complained that nutritional fortification and recommended supplementation doses were not making up for the shortfall. These people were ignored, and sometimes ridiculed - however, over the last few years studies indicate that they may have been right after all. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Not that many foods contain vitamin D. Some fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, as well as fish liver oils are considered to be the best sources. Some vitamin D is also present in beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Most of these are Vitamin D3. Some mushrooms provide variable amounts of vitamin D2.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Most of the food sourced vitamin D in the western diet comes from fortified foods - where vitamin D is artificially added. Most US milk is fortified with 100 IU/cup of vitamin D. In the 1930s milk was fortified in many countries to combat rickets, which was a major health problem then.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Excerpts from http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/161618.php</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08439904621370400171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675180248202016445.post-73810258170522112512013-02-01T23:36:00.000-08:002013-03-07T10:35:16.169-08:00Are you Qualified Person for this?<div style="text-align: justify;">It is hard to believe that this business maybe not for you. It is considered CRAZY if you always do the same thing but expecting different result. If most of the people you know is not financially independent and you do not like to do something different then do not be in this business.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Do you like easy money?</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You should know that the LAW of the UNIVERSE is always in effect. If you want great amount of wealth, you should work for it because there is no easy money in all kind of business except if it is a scam. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>REJECTIONS</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you lived your life without experiencing rejections and you do not like to feel anything like that. Do not get involved in this business. Everybody thinks differently, even your close friends and relatives will reject you if they cannot see the opportunity you are showing them. This kind of business is sorting business, only the people with right mind and attitude can do this business.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you think that you are qualified person to be in this kind of business then do not be afraid to try network marketing. The reason most people do not reach the top is simply because they quit too soon. So why would someone quit short of the top?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Most people join only to make money. If they don't make money in the first few months or years, they become discouraged and quit (and then often bad-mouth the industry!). Others quit and go looking for a company with a better compensation plan. But joining to make a few quick dollars is not the reason to get into the business.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><a name='more'></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The Two Essential Reasons to Join a Network Marketing Business</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Reason number one is to help yourself. Reason number two is to help others. If you join for only one of these two reasons, then the system will not work for you.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Reason number one, means that you come to the business primarily to change quadrants-to change from the E (Employee) or the S (Self-employed) quadrant to the B (Business owner) or I (Investor) quadrant.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This change is normally very difficult for most people-because of money. The true E or S quadrant person will not work unless it is for money. This is also what causes people to not reach the top of the network marketing system: they want money more than they want to change quadrants.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">A B quadrant or I quadrant person will also work for money, but in a different way. The B quadrant person works to build or create an asset-in this case, a business system. The I quadrant person invests in the asset or the system.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The beauty of most network marketing systems is that you do not really make much money unless you help others leave the E and S quadrants and succeed in the B and I quadrants. If you focus on helping others make this shift, then you will be successful in the business.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As a B or an I, sometimes you don't get paid for years; this, a true E quadrant or S quadrant person will not do. It's not part of their core values. Risk and delayed gratification disturb them emotionally.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Delayed Gratification and Emotional Intelligence</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">One of the beauties of network marketing is that it focuses on developing your emotional intelligence as well as your business skills.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Emotional intelligence is an entirely different matter from academic intelligence. In general, someone with high emotional intelligence will often do better than someone with high academic intelligence but low emotional intelligence. That explains, in part, why some people do well in school but not so well in the real world.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The ability to delay gratification is a sign of higher emotional intelligence. In a recent study of emotional intelligence, it was found that people who could delay gratification often led more successful lives than those who could not.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is why the educational system inherent in a good network marketing opportunity is so important. It's the emotional education or emotional intelligence aspect of their programs that I find so valuable for people.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Many people write me and tell me they loved my book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, but I fear that many of them don't get the most important point of the book: Lesson #1, "The rich don't work for money."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Once I have built or bought an asset, that asset works hard to make money for me. But I will not work for money-I will work only to build or buy assets. Those assets make me richer and richer, while I work less and less. That is what the rich do. The poor and middle class work hard for money, and then buy liabilities instead of investing in assets.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>What Kind of Asset is a Network Marketing Business?</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Remember, there are two reasons required to be successful in network marketing: to help yourself, and to help others. Reason number one means helping yourself get to the B side of the quadrant. What about reason number two</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The beauty of most network marketing systems is that you don't really make much money unless you help others leave the E and S</div><div style="text-align: justify;">quadrants and succeed in the B and I quadrants. If you focus on helping others make this shift, then you will be successful in the business</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If you only want to teach yourself to be a B quadrant and I quadrant person, then a true network marketing system won't work for you. You may as well go to a traditional business school, which focuses only on your becoming a B quadrant person.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The beauty of a network marketing business is that your goal is to create assets, which are other B's working under you-and their job is to create other B's working under them. In traditional business, the focus is for the B to have only E's and S's working for them.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The type of business I was taught to build is a business with me at the top and E's and S's at the base. I really don't have room at the top for many other B's, which is why in my businesses, I strongly recommend that all my employees look into network marketing as their own part-time businesses.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The traditional corporate system really is a pyramid, because there are a few B's and I's near the top, and more E's and S's at the base. A network marketing system is a reverse pyramid: its primary focus is to bring up more and more B's to the top.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">One type of pyramid, the traditional type, has its base on the ground; the other type has its base in the air. It's a pyramid that pulls you up instead of pushing you down. A network marketing business gives everyone access to what used to be the domain only of the rich.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>This passage is excerpted by permission from The Business School for People Who Like Helping People, by Robert T.
